Pudgy Penguins has a thriving community centered around its holders. Despite the recent NFT bear market, the Pudgy community, known as 

, has remained strong and active. The brand has a large online presence, with over 2 million followers on Instagram, 214,000 followers on X and 60,000 members on Discord.

PENGU: Dive Into Pudgy Penguins’ Upcoming Token

This session we drilled into the structural shifts of the NFT landscape and learn about the underlying technology that's pushing the boundaries of digital ownership. 

The NFT market has been going through the bottom of its cycle as many NFTs' 

 have retreated significantly. While the hype surrounding NFTs has died down, some surviving NFT projects have been pivoting from NFT 

 (PFPs) to something that can potentially onboard Web 2.0 consumers into web3.

, we got a fresh overview of the current state of the NFT market, debated how building an AppChain could enhance the consumer-facing ability of NFT IPs and discussed what a post-PFP NFT era could look like. This edition of 

 recaps the Mastermind livestream (in case you missed it), offering comprehensive expertise and insights from leading figures in the NFT space.

Our Nov 5, 2024 livestream hosted experts with strong NFT backgrounds, including representatives from the marketplace and different blue chip NFT communities. Our four guests were as follows:

The discussion started with the question of whether NFTs are still relevant to the broader web3 and crypto market. Despite all the ups and downs in NFT markets, all of the panelists agreed that NFTs remain an important part of the web3 ecosystem, largely because NFT communities are still loyal to their favorite NFT IPs, and that “stickiness” hasn’t been affected by the fluctuation in floor prices.

The discussion then moved to what has actually caused the decline of the NFT market. Some panelists highlighted that the web3 user journey itself may not encourage users to onboard the ecosystem. JackLu remarked that "NFT is a purely web3 and on-chain use case; you have to onboard to a CEX, go download a wallet, go to a marketplace to start trading, but that process sits many steps behind for a new user to come to the ecosystem. During the bear market over the last two years, very few users were coming into the ecosystem, and trying to get new people to NFT was just extraordinarily hard from a pure user experience perspective."

He also highlighted that new users were finding it difficult to get into the NFT ecosystem because of the steep learning curve. Due to the lack of new users, the NFT market became increasingly stagnant during the market downturn. The panel also pointed out that heavy financialization has diverted NFTs’ original purpose of having fun with a group of like-minded people, which could also be part of the reason for the decline of the NFT market.

In the second part of the discussion, the panel took a deep dive into a recent development involving surviving NFT projects: the launch of an AppChain. 

AppChains are blockchains designed and optimized for running specific applications, or fulfilling a particular business need. Their purpose is to reduce congestion, lower transaction costs and help a particular ecosystem improve on-chain processing efficiency.

The recent mainnet launch of ApeChain, an AppChain backed by Yuga Labs, has made a lot of noise in the market. On the other hand, NFT project Azuki announced its AnimeChain earlier, an Arbitrum-based AppChain, and Pudgy Penguins' parent company announced its Layer 2 Abstract, a consumer crypto–focused blockchain. 

The panel shared their belief that this AppChain launching phenomenon could be an ecosystem expansion strategy similar to what some Web 2.0 IP holders have been adopting. For example, companies like Disney have spent enormous resources building and growing their IPs and brands, as well as launching physical products and services around those IPs, and ultimately, they have their ecosystem. With AppChain, NFT IP owners could do the same in a web3 and decentralized manner.

Besides the launching of AppChains, the panel also discussed the relationship between NFTs and web3 gaming. The conclusion was that there are builders taking advantage of this softer market to build something meaningful “under the hood.” After all, creating a good game title and its related infrastructure takes time, and some of the panelists have seen promising signs from these builders.

With all the innovations and efforts, the future of NFTs remains positive, even after the space has passed its hype cycle. After all, the NFT itself is a technology, and PFP is just one use case for this technology. Moving forward with innovations that can improve user experience, there's a chance for more and more NFT PFP use cases in the future.

In the final part of the discussion, all the panelists gave their takes on the future of NFTs, along with some advice to creators and builders. Jack believes builders should focus on the long term, building something that’s authentic to themselves and avoiding "Shiny Object Syndrome." Dennis highlighted that besides products, the community is also a crucial part of NFTs. His friendships with builders may last a lifetime, and the value of their contributions added back to the projects could be greater than expected. 

NFTs may not be the most trending topic in the current web3 space, but the underlying technology is undeniably transformative. As NFTs pass through the hype cycle and move on from speculation-driven to builder-driven, their technology could be a gateway for onboarding general consumers to the web3 realm.

Talk about NFT enthusiasts, and the first thing that comes to mind is crypto gamers decorating their NFT avatars or degens obsessed with pixelated, sometimes controversial, art. Few people would immediately link NFTs with fine art during such a conversation. Yet, hidden somewhere in the NFT quarters of the 

 (ETH) blockchain, there’s a welcoming retreat for true digital fine art connoisseurs. Meet SuperRare (RARE) 

 an Ethereum-based NFT marketplace focused on refined and exclusive digital artwork. While most other 

 from gaming assets and avatars to entry tickets and more 

 SuperRare specializes only in fine art NFTs.

The art that finds its spot on the digital shelves of this marketplace isn't trivial or common: true to its name, SuperRare only features rare artwork. In order to be accepted as a creator on the platform, artists must submit an application form and be selected. 

Nevertheless, while some might find the concept of SuperRare a touch too elitist, many others 

 particularly true crypto fine art aficionados 

 will welcome a rare platform that caters exclusively to their tastes.

 is an Ethereum-based NFT marketplace that specializes exclusively in digital artwork NFTs. 

In order to list NFTs on the platform, creators need to submit an application form and be selected by the project team reviewing their samples. One key requirement for NFTs approved by the platform is uniqueness. Using the curated selection process, SuperRare maintains high standards and exclusivity for its marketplace. The platform positions itself as an upmarket provider specializing in quality and rare digital art.

You won't find gaming, web3 domain, membership pass or other types of NFTs on SuperRare. The platform caters only to those interested in artwork-based NFT assets. Contemporary and abstract art–based digital paintings are typically the pieces regularly listed on its marketplace.

SuperRare was launched on Ethereum in April 2018 by SuperRare Labs, a startup founded by three early NFT enthusiasts 

 brothers John Crain and Charles Crain, along with Jonathan Perkins. In August 2021, SuperRare introduced its native token, RARE, designed to promote decentralization and community-driven 

Starting as a creator on SuperRare isn't as easy as on the majority of other NFT marketplaces. To be accepted, creators need to fill out the 

. Successful applicants are contacted and invited to list their work on the marketplace. Part of the selection process requires artists to submit three to five artwork pieces that are used to evaluate their talents, as well as the fit of their creations to the overall spirit and purpose of the platform. Thus, degen-style pixelated monkeys are probably not the surest way to qualify as a SuperRare creator — but who knows?

Those whose work is accepted can then prepare and list their artworks on the marketplace. Each piece of artwork has a size limit of 250 MB, with acceptable file formats of PNG, JPEG, GIF, MP4 and GLB. Tokenizing and selling physical artwork on SuperRare isn't possible, as the platform only supports digital art pieces. The actual artwork is stored on the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) platform, while the NFTs reside directly on the Ethereum blockchain.

Upon the first sale of an NFT, known as a mint sale or primary sale, the creator receives 85% of the price, with the remaining 15% going to the 

 Community Treasury, a decentralized fund aimed at promoting the platform's decentralization and community development. Any sales of items after their primary sales are classified as secondary sales, for which the seller receives 90% of the price paid, with the remaining 10% going to the original creator as a royalty.

Buying and Collecting Digital Art on SuperRare

Lovers of digital fine art can purchase SuperRare NFTs via three main modes 

 Auctions, Offers and Buy Now. Auctions are further divided into Reserve Auctions and Scheduled Auctions. The mode under which an NFT is listed is determined by its creator.

 features an initial reserve price. When a bidder meets the price, a 24-hour countdown kicks in to allow other buyers to place their competing bids. Meanwhile, a 

 features preset start and end times and an optional starting price. Each auction ends at the specified time, regardless of whether any bids meet the starting price.

SuperRare also runs a rewards program for the holders of its exclusive

 for an artwork from a participating creator chosen by the SuperRare team. Additionally, the holder gets three chances each month to win an NFT from a participating artist. There are 250 RarePasses in total, and a wallet can hold up to five RarePasses that maximize their airdrop rewards and chances to win.

SuperRare is often compared to another popular NFT marketplace, 

. Both platforms are based on the Ethereum network, but they cater to somewhat different audiences, and significantly differ in terms of fees paid and artist royalties. While SuperRare is an exclusive market for rare digital artwork NFTs, OpenSea supports the sales of a wide variety of both exclusive and common NFTs, including those for gaming assets, digital and physical artwork, event tickets, avatars and more.

Royalty fees for secondary sales, which amount to 10% on SuperRare, are optional on OpenSea. In addition, the transaction fee is somewhat lower on OpenSea (2.5%) as compared to SuperRare (3%). Finally, while the transaction fee is paid by the buyer on SuperRare , OpenSea deducts this fee from the seller.

In 2023, the SuperRare Labs team introduced Rare Protocol, a set of 

 on Ethereum designed to promote the open curation and discovery of rare NFTs. The protocol is open for anyone to participate. Users of Rare Protocol can 

 RARE, the platform's native cryptocurrency, on their preferred creator to gain entry into the artist's Rarity Pool. As the creator sells their fine art NFTs, stakers in their Rarity Pool also receive crypto rewards from the sales.

As users continue staking in different pools, the SuperRare protocol will create a web of Curated Lists, each containing a list of various creators endorsed by the staker community. Hence, Curated Lists and Rarity Pools are deeply intertwined, allowing Rare Protocol to serve as a giant hub for rare NFT and talent discovery. The whole idea behind Rare Protocol is to encourage active NFT discovery and curation driven by the user community.

In August 2021, the project introduced its native governance and curation token, RARE. RARE is an
