Celo has transitioned from a Layer 1 blockchain to an Ethereum Layer 2 using Optimism rollups, enhancing security, scalability, and interoperability with Ethereum. Announced on March 26, the upgrade introduces one-second block times, sub-cent transaction fees, and support for USDT and USDC as gas. The transition, first proposed in mid-2023, leverages the OP tech stack, reducing complexity by 365,000 lines of code while maintaining Celo’s chain history.
