With Bitcoin’s price dropping substantially in recent weeks, traders are turning to altcoins for potential opportunities. Can altcoins revive the crypto market — or is this just another wave of hype?

Several new ETF applications have been submitted to the SEC for 

 and Dogecoin. Paz Gonzalez sees this trend as a reflection of past crypto cycles, while Kendrick is particularly bullish on XRP and Solana. Given XRP’s legal battle with the SEC last year (in which a federal judge ruled in Ripple Labs’ favor), Kendrick believes XRP has an edge over other altcoins when it comes to ETF approval. Numerous investment firms have already filed for XRP ETFs, and its use as a payment solution gives it strong real-world utility.

Kendrick notes that Solana (SOL) is the next-strongest contender. It boasts more use cases than XRP, but lacks the regulatory advantage and sheer number of ETF applications. Meanwhile, critics point to Solana’s relatively small validator set and to concerns over its potential centralization.

Paz Gonzalez agrees with Kendrick that XRP is the most likely crypto asset to receive the first spot ETF approval. However, she sees Litecoin (LTC) as next in line. Often referred to as Bitcoin’s “little sister,” Litecoin has long been positioned as a payment-focused cryptocurrency.

Speculation, barriers to institutional acceptance — andhype

Retail speculation tends to be higher for altcoins than for Bitcoin, and Gonzalez attributes the recent surge in altcoin activity to this trend. pointing out that institutions have historically been cautious and have taken years to fully embrace Bitcoin. Before backing altcoins, they need to see substantial trading volume and a shift in market sentiment.

Kendrick predicts that the altcoins currently being considered for ETFs may experience speculative spikes in the short term. He cites Dogecoin’s price surge following ETF-related news, which was quickly followed by a decline. He expects this pattern to hold across other altcoins, but foresees a sustained long-term rise after ETF approvals are finalized.

However, Gonzalez remains skeptical about meme coins securing ETFs, arguing that they lack real utility. The only exception, she suggests, might be Dogecoin — given Elon Musk’s influence and ties to Donald Trump. Even then, she believes an ETF would only be viable if Dogecoin eventually finds adoption as a legitimate payment method, or serves another functional purpose.

Can altcoin ETFs receive the same support as blue-chip crypto ETFs?

Kendrick highlights Bitcoin’s status as the crypto market’s staple cryptocurrency. Even with the rise of altcoin ETFs, he remains confident that Bitcoin will continue to dominate the market.

Gonzalez points out that the introduction of crypto ETFs has created greater regulation and centralization within the crypto market — shifting away from the original principles of decentralization on which cryptocurrency was built. She believes that as more ETFs are introduced and adoption grows, this trend toward regulation and centralization will only accelerate.

According to Gonzalez, the primary purpose of crypto ETFs is to bring institutional investors into the crypto space. Moreover, she notes that ETFs serve as an entry point for retail traders. Many traditional investors are hesitant to put their money into an industry that still operates in a legal gray area, thus making regulated ETFs a more appealing option.

Traditional investors typically take a conservative approach, prioritizing diversification in order to manage risk. Kendrick highlights the potential for a crypto index ETF, similar to those in the stock market, which often outperform individual stocks over time. He believes it’s only a matter of time before an index ETF is introduced for cryptocurrencies.

Gonzalez reinforces this idea, noting that investing in individual stocks — or cryptos — requires extensive research in order to understand their fundamentals. For many investors, this process can be overwhelming. An index ETF simplifies the decision-making process, offering a diversified and lower-risk approach to crypto exposure.

Gonzalez also brings up the classic trading mantra, “Buy the rumor, sell the news.” She and Kendrick both agree that XRP is a strong candidate for one of the first altcoin spot ETFs. From Gonzalez’s perspective, buying early could maximize potential gains. But even without a potential ETF approval, she sees XRP as a solid long-term investment, and emphasizes the importance of using 

Could ETFs ignite the next bull run? How to position yourself

Recently, both Bitcoin and altcoins have faced turbulence, with altcoin spot ETFs now taking center stage. Gonzalez and Kendrick take a step back to examine the broader macroeconomic landscape. Gonzalez notes that altcoins are moving in sync with the overall market — which isn’t in great shape. While crypto remains a strong and innovative sector, it’s still a niche market, and with the general economy in decline, conditions aren’t ideal for altcoin ETFs in the short term, though they do hold long-term potential.

Many investors have been anticipating a bull run, but Gonzalez cautions against comparing the current market to events of four years ago. The crypto landscape is still evolving, and it’s crucial to adapt. Trying to predict market movements with past cycles in mind isn’t always reliable. Instead, she believes success in a bear market comes down to having the right strategy. For her, that means executing quick buy-and-sell trades to capture small, consistent profits.

Kendrick, however, takes a different approach. He favors a buy-and-hold strategy, supplemented by 

 to hedge against downside risk. He also steers clear of highly volatile tokens unless he’s trading on a short-term basis.

February 2025 presented a unique landscape for cryptocurrency volatility, particularly for Bitcoin (BTC). The month can be divided into three distinct phases: a volatile beginning, a calm middle and a tumultuous end. At the outset, BTC witnessed significant price corrections due to macroeconomic factors, particularly President Trump’s announcements regarding tariffs on neighboring countries. These announcements triggered sharp reactions within both crypto and traditional markets, leading to a spike in realized volatility.

Midway through the month, however, BTC's volatility dropped to a historically low level of 29%. This period of subdued volatility was notable, as it marked the lowest level of realized volatility BTC had experienced in nearly 18 months. This calm phase belied the underlying tensions in the market, as traders remained cautious but still anticipated further developments regarding economic policies. The low volatility during this period reflected a temporary stabilization, but it was clear that external factors were still at play, creating an environment ripe for speculation.

As February 2025 drew to a close, volatility surged again, largely driven by macroeconomic uncertainty and specific developments in the crypto space. By the end of the month, Bitcoin’s price had fallen below $80K, and Ethereum (ETH) had lost all of its gains since the November 2024 US elections. This dramatic shift underscored the volatile nature of the crypto market, and highlighted the speed with which market sentiment can change in response to new information.

February’s volatility wasn’t merely a product of internal market dynamics: it was also heavily influenced by macroeconomic events. President Trump's tariff policies created significant uncertainty, affecting traditional markets and the crypto space. The market reacted sharply to these announcements, with crypto assets often acting as leading indicators for broader market movements. The initial announcement of tariffs led to a wave of selling, as traders sought to de-risk their positions ahead of anticipated market corrections.

Throughout the month, several key announcements contributed to volatility. For example, the tariffs on steel and aluminum and the uncertainty over their implementation created a speculative environment. Traders were particularly sensitive to these developments, leading to pronounced price movements in both crypto and equities. This interconnectedness illustrates the growing relationship between crypto markets and traditional financial systems, as macroeconomic factors can have profound impacts on asset prices across the board.

Low volatility levels experienced in the middle of February, when BTC's realized volatility dropped to 29%, serve as a reminder that calm periods can be deceptive. The historical context of this floor level indicates that such low volatility often precedes significant reversals. As market participants observed the rising volatility toward the end of February, it became evident that the calm was likely temporary — and that uncertainty was increasing.

Looking ahead, expectations of volatility in the crypto market have rebounded in response to ongoing economic uncertainties. The announcement regarding Trump’s proposed strategic crypto asset stockpile further complicated market dynamics. Initially, traders anticipated new demand for crypto assets, but the clarification that the stockpile wouldn't involve new purchases led to disappointment and a swift decline in implied volatility — a scenario that illustrates the complex interplay between market expectations and actual policy actions.

What’s Happening Now With the SEC’s Expected Approval of Ether Spot ETFs?

Ether Spot ETFs would track the performance of Ether, directly holding ETH. They differ from Ether Futures ETFs that are available in most markets, which require the periodic rolling of futures contracts and can possess tracking errors. Please refer to this 

The firms applying for listing Ether Spot ETFs in the U.S. are BlackRock, VanEck, ARK 21Shares, Grayscale, Fidelity, Invesco and Galaxy Digital (through a joint proposal), in addition to Franklin Templeton. 

The U.S. SEC has postponed its decision several times because it claims to need more time to consider the applications. However, the deadline for the earliest applicants, BlackRock and Fidelity, is one month away (May 23, 2024). 

It’s widely perceived that SEC rejection would lead to legal action from the applicants.

The market has been building up its anticipation of Ether Spot ETFs since the approval of the listing of Ether Spot ETFs in January 2024.

However, SEC Chair Gary Gensler said at that time that the Bitcoin Spot ETF approvals shouldn't "signal anything about the commission’s views as to the status of other crypto assets under the federal securities laws."

What’s the Chance of SEC Approval of Ether Spot ETFs in May 2024?

Ether’s price surged immediately after the approval of Bitcoin Spot ETFs back in January, and the market anticipates approval of Ether ETFs in the U.S. later this year. However, remarks from SEC Chairperson Gary Gensler on multiple occasions this year have dampened expectations.

In our view, the chance of Ether Spot ETF approval remains dim — despite Hong Kong’s surprising approval of them in April — as the agency is likely to stick to its own assessment before approving Ether Spot ETFs .

The dwindling ETH/BTC ratio also illuminates the lowering probability of Ether Spot ETF approval in the U.S., which has dropped below 0.05 —a multi-year low — as shown above.

However, the market hasn’t given up, as reflected in the exercise price of ETH options expiring before and after the deadline for the SEC’s decision on ETH Spot ETFs. The exercise price of calls expiring on May 10, 2024, centers on a $3,300~$3,400 interval, while the exercise of calls expiring on May 31, 2024 is remarkably higher, falling between $3,600 and $3,800.

 a substantial increase in Ether’s position by institutions as Bitcoin’s outperformance against Ether continues to test new lows. This suggests that institutions may have prepared for the approval of Ether Spot ETFs, at least in the medium term, following the approval of Bitcoin Spot ETFs.

The key consideration by the SEC lies in whether the ETH token is a security or commodity. Simply put, a token closer to the definition of security might have a higher chance of approval, as the SEC may determine it to be in compliance with Federal securities laws.

 several times that PoW tokens are unlikely to meet the definition of securities under federal laws. As Ether shifts from PoW to

In addition, the concentration risk of Ether staking could make it look more like a security. 

 of the total staked ETH on the network. However, the popularity of restaking in recent months may erode Lido’s dominance, and may indirectly ultimately lead to the approval of Ether Spot ETFs in the U.S.

What Makes the SEC’s Approval So Important?

Although Hong Kong is likely ahead of the U.S. in launching Ether Spot ETFs, as their approvals are expected to be completed by the end of this month (April 2024), not many markets worldwide are offering them yet. 

Despite the U.S, not being the first mover, the impact of approval in the U.S. market would likely be more profound due to the nation’s sheer capital size. Bitcoin Spot ETFs have attracted capital of more than $54 billion so far, leaving other markets in the dust in terms of size since their launch there three months ago. As such, it’s expected that Ether Spot ETFs would bring more capital than any of the existing legalized markets combined. 

If Ether Spot ETFs Are Approved, How Much Capital Can They Bring?

Based on the performance of Bitcoin Spot ETFs so far, it’s estimated that Ether Spot ETFs would accumulate at least $16 billion in capital.

Nonetheless, if the SEC allows a version of staked Ether ETFs, the expected AUM is beyond imagination, as the current native yield from Ether staking amounts to 3.3%, higher than many of its competing asset classes.

Could Approval of Spot Ether ETFs Trigger Another Crypto Rally?

The possible approval of Bitcoin Spot ETFs in September 2023 reversed Bitcoin's bearish trend, creating a new all-time high right after the actual ETF approval. Bitcoin's outperformance gave rise to an ensuing rally from other tokens, as speculation arose from upbeat market sentiment. As Bitcoin Spot ETF approval hit the headlines, new investors were tempted into the cryptocurrency and sustained the rally.

The above chart indicates the market capitalization of USDT, the largest cryptocurrency. The increase in its market cap arises from increasing supply as it’s pegged to the U.S. dollar. Historically, the increasing supply coincided with the surging price action of the broader cryptocurrency, as the supply represents the on-chain capital. 

Therefore, the possible approval of Ether Spot ETFs will likely sustain the current bull market. New investors are expected to inject new capital into the crypto market, further boosting the supply of USDT.
