Unified Trading Account vs. Derivatives Account: The Differences

Crypto derivatives account usually refers to an account that traders use to speculate the future price movements of cryptocurrencies without having actually to own the underlying assets. But how is the UTA different from a Derivatives Account?

Benefits of Upgrading Simple Mode to UTA 

Simply deposit the available assets into the Unified Trading Account, which offers traders a complete view of the portfolio. Aside from the operational convenience of combining all trading instruments into a single account, Unified Trading Accounts offer users several key trading benefits.  

Support of over 60 crypto assets as collateral

The UTA supports more than 60 assets as combined collateral for leveraged trading. These assets, such as ETH, BTC, USDT and USDC, serve as combined collateral at the account level. The system will automatically calculate the account's net asset value pegged in USD based on various conversion ratios. Using the net asset value, UTA automatically determines the margin requirements. Users can easily cross-margin across a broader range of products.

You will receive five times higher leverage on your Spot positions, allowing you to take advantage of market opportunities in more significant position sizes. Leverage enables you to increase profits quickly with less capital, but managing your downside risk is also important.

The UTA also offers users auto-borrowing if an asset's equity drops below zero due to market fluctuations. Note that interest may apply, but you would only be subject to liquidation if you cannot maintain the account's level margin.

Upgrading to the UTA allows you to offset unrealized profits and losses because all assets are consolidated. Even unrealized profits on Derivatives positions can be used for profits, increasing capital efficiency. Calculating the margin in the UTA is at the account-level instead of the position-level. 

Optimized margin calculation and risk control functionality

Account value and risks are calculated in USD. Conversion rates on different assets vary according to liquidity conditions, but the formula for calculating the USD value of your UTA is as follows:

Total Asset Value (in USD) = Number of Assets × USD Index Price × Conversion Ratio

Calculating asset value at the portfolio value supports account-level margining instead of position-level. As a result, losses on a position don't necessarily result in liquidation. Position-level liquidation can amplify losses because it doesn't consider your entire portfolio. Netting unrealized profits and losses give you optimized and more accurate margin calculation.

If the total assets in the account meet the initial and maintenance margin requirements, you can place new orders even if some of the asset amounts have negative equity. 

Overall, you enhance risk management at the portfolio level and improve capital use.

In different trading accounts, margin requirements are calculated separately. Previously, products like Spot, USDT Perpetual Contracts, and USDC Options could not be cross-margined. If you trade a position and its hedge in separate accounts, your margin requirements will not factor in any offsetting risks, meaning you would have to put up more capital. 

With a Unified Trading Account, any positive and negative P&L nets out, and your portfolio risk is reflected on a hedged basis. If you've hedged much of your portfolio risk, your margin requirements could be significantly lower. As a result, the UTA puts you in a better position to put on hedges and manage risks. Margining occurs at the account level and is favorable for hedged positions.

Upgrading to a Unified Trading Account is quick and easy.

You can't change back to your previous Derivatives Accounts once you have upgraded your account to a UTA. 

Your account will take 15 minutes to finish upgrading. While the upgrade is underway, you won't be able to trade, deposit, withdraw, transfer, or exchange assets. After the upgrade is complete, you'll receive an email notification, and all of your USDT and USDC assets will automatically transfer to the UTA. 

Users can access Unified Trading Accounts via the Bybit website, app (version 3.25.5 or higher), or API.
